Position Opening: Temporary Behavior Intervention Specialist

Reports to: Behavior Intervention Program Supervisor
Status: Full-time, temporary
Hours: 40 hours per week, approximately 7am-3:30pm M-F.
Position to begin October 2nd, 2017, and continue for approximately 10 weeks.
Salary range: $21.00-$23.00 per hour

The Behavior Intervention Specialist provides assessment, counseling, mediation, monitoring, and case management of students. The work is performed at a Saint Paul High School working in close collaboration with building staff and following all building protocol.


Program Responsibilities

  • Provide case management for students who are experiencing behavior issues that interfere with their learning and learning environment.
  • Meet with students, parents, and school staff to determine appropriate interventions for students.
  • Collaborate with community organizations that provide mentoring, mental health, and other services to the school.
  • Coordinate work with the efforts of the Behavior Intervention Specialists working at other neighboring schools as well as the school staff in your building.
  • Maintain student records and monitor progress.
  • Lead educational groups for students regarding anger management, problem-solving, and other social skills.
  • Perform other program duties as assigned by program manager and/or school building principal.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Respond to all communication from clients, coworkers, or colleagues in a timely, responsive and professional manner.  This includes voicemail, email, and program specific communication as designated (cell-phone, pager, etc.)
  • Maintain daily schedule as set by manager, notifying manager and agency front desk of any changes in schedule or anticipated availability.
  • Present a professional and positive image of our organization by maintaining dress and personal standards that are consistent with the audience or client group you will be working with on any given day or situation.
  • Maintain individual client records, and statistical information according to agency standards and specific program protocol.
  • Develop and maintain competency with basic computer programs and computerized data information system required to complete all functions and expectations of the organization.
  • Participate in individual supervision and group consultation. Attend program meetings, staff meetings and staff training.
  • Maintain and enhance your ability and skills by keeping current with pertinent research and program related literature, attending workshops and seminars, and taking advantage of work related opportunities for learning on the job.
  • Maintain and responsibly care for agency equipment used in the course of performing job duties. (e.g. computers, cell phones, pagers, vehicles, etc.)  Employees will be held responsible for damage or loss of equipment resulting from the employee’s misuse or failure to appropriately safeguard the equipment.
  • Other tasks, committee assignments and/or special projects as assigned by supervisor/management team.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or Psychology + 2 years’ experience working with youth and families. 
  • Ability to work with youth and families from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate well to a wide range of people.
  • Experience advocating for youth while providing high expectations and support.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with different professional teams.            
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, equity, and cultural and linguistic responsiveness.
  • Experience providing counseling/behavior management in a school setting.
